Butternut Squash & Kale Lasagna

Butternut Squash & Kale Lasagna

It’s finally fall, ya’ll. Sure, the calendar declared it months ago, but this year it took the world a little bit of time to catch up. We’ve had a lot of warm days lately, but today, I opened my window and I could smell it, feel it, breathe it in with a big, lovely sigh. It’s here. Fall.

I just adore this time of the year. The colors, the crispness, the shift we all make when summer fades out and the cool season fades in. I don’t know if it’s my Nordic heritage or just years of conditioning in upstate New York and New England, but I’ll take cold over heat any day of the week. Somehow summer heat just seems too stifling, but a deep gulp of brisk, cool air opens me right up – it feels life-affirming. The time of the year is always a reminder that world keeps turning, and to make the most of each and every season. And with fall, that means long hikes, family get-togethers, cool nights, and some really amazing season food that taste just like Fall feels – utterly wonderful.

Best Veggie Burgers Ever

Best Veggie Burgers Ever

To all the veggie burger haters out there – I hear you. No one trusts those compressed patties of indeterminate ingredients. All those mass-produced phony “burgers” are just masquerading as one of the world’s most iconic comfort foods, but you can see right through it. […]

Pineapple Salsa

Pineapple Salsa

Exactly one year ago, I was exactly 13 days away from getting married. Which means I was probably about 7 days away from a 6-day stretch of sleepless nights, last-minute anxiety about silly, arbitrary things that I’ll never care about again like place-cards and the […]

Chard, Leek, and Feta Quiche

Chard, Leek, and Feta Quiche

January is the worst. I’m sorry, it just is. Without the holidays to blur the sharp glare of winter, January is like that first week back in the office after a month-long tropical vacation. The good times are over. There’s nothing to look forward to. […]

Berry & Green Smoothie

Berry & Green Smoothie

Last weekend was wonderful. I got together with friends, we ventured to an adorable winery about an hour outside the city. We sipped, we ate, we laughed. There were crisp whites, deep reds, blueberry wines, spiced apple wines… and delicious grappa, cognac, and whiskey. And […]

Roasted Red Pepper and Kale Soup

Roasted Red Pepper and Kale Soup

Even though I love to cook, dream about it (…some great ideas have come to me in my sleep, although I have a recurring nightmare about chocolate seizing. I think its post-culinary-school-trauma related. Another story for another time.), and live for it…sometimes I just don’t […]

Moxie Bars

Moxie Bars

Sometimes, what seem to be the simplest things are the most elusive.  Sleep, for example.  It’s a basic human function. People do it on the subway, standing up. My cats do it for 20 hours a day. My brother can pretty much do it on […]

Pumpkin-Banana Protein Oats

Pumpkin-Banana Protein Oats

Isn’t it strange how much we change? I remember being a child and having such strong convictions about the most mundane things. I would never eat a tomato. I would never utter a curse word. I would always love the color pink. And then as […]

Roasted Vegetable and Harvest Grains Salad

Roasted Vegetable and Harvest Grains Salad

There is a version of myself, tucked deep inside, that wishes I didn’t care so much about food. She gets fed up with my daily internal struggles over what constitutes a “normal” amount of cheese, and is annoyed by just how much I love wine […]

Pumpkin Bites

Pumpkin Bites

Pumpkin. Cinnamon. Honey. Cloves. You can almost smell it, right? I just love the foods that comes around this time of the year. It’s almost like I can finally get down to business. Deep flavors, hearty produce. Pumpkin is all that and more. It’s kind […]
