Berry & Green Smoothie
Last weekend was wonderful. I got together with friends, we ventured to an adorable winery about an hour outside the city. We sipped, we ate, we laughed. There were crisp whites, deep reds, blueberry wines, spiced apple wines… and delicious grappa, cognac, and whiskey. And cheese. Sharp cheddar along with soft, mild brie. And a meal of crusty bread and a classic pasta with a red basil sauce. We talked about our lives, our jobs, our 5-year plans. Like I said. Wonderful.
But then I woke up the next morning. I was a little achy, and woozy, and disheveled, and so full. I felt off. I wanted to flush out everything I’d consumed the night before. Purify, cleanse, detox.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’d never, ever trade good nights with great friends. For anything. Life is meant to endure a little too much wine now and then, and it positively thrives on boisterous laughter and deep conversations with those we love. But there has to be balance. And when I’ve had a little too much of, well, everything, I like to reset by trying to eat as fresh, wholesome, and healthy as possible. This is a clean-food week for me. And it starts with this blessing of a smoothie.
It’s got just a touch of everything that I need to feel like I can reset. My experience with green smoothies is pretty novice, but I’ve been slowly adding just a bit more spinach and kale each time I make it. The beautiful thing is that the greens don’t overpower its smooth sweetness – just adds a rich earthiness that lingers in the background to remind you that you’re getting a mega-dose of awesome nutrients.
Balance comes into play in this smoothie, too – flavor isn’t scarified for the sake of being healthy. If you ask me, it never should be. They live in delicious harmony. This is a great recipe to play around with – add what you like to make it your own. I’ve already made it was strawberries instead of blueberries, and adding a dollop of Greek yogurt ups the protein and creaminess factors that much more. Blend away, friends!
